Towards Robotics Leadership: An Analysis of Leadership Characteristics and the Roles Robots will Inherit in Future Human Society View more presentations from Jeffrey Tzu Kwan Valino Koh
As the responsibilities of robots within our society takes on increasing importance, consideration of the role of robots is ever evolving. Much like the rights of man has been displaced by the rights of humankind, as well as the elevation of the rights of animals and all living things, robots are increasingly exerting their “right to exist”.

We present an Organic User Interface (OUI) that combines sensing through a Hall effect sensor, with actuation through electromagnetically manipulated ferrofluid. The movement of rare-earth magnets, worn on the fingertips, over a surface embedded with a Hall effect sensor array, gives the user the ability to interact with the ferrofluid. This system provides a three-dimensional, physically animated response, as well as three dimensional, spatial sensing input. The vibration of the magnets worn on the fingertips, produced by the pulse of the electromagnet, provides the user with haptic feedback without the need of physical contact with the ferrofluid. Liquid Interface is a multi-modal interface providing a visual, audio and haptic experience.

In collaboration with Kasun Karunanayaka, Mili John Tharakan, Jose R. Sepulveda and Adrian David Cheok.

Special thanks to Jeremy Heng Zhi Wei, Liu Yijiang, Eishem Bilal Naik and Manoj Krishnan.

How do we express a future without war as we know it? Is it possible to imagine the seemingly impossible? Could we redesign war for the benefit of all? We can’t seem to end the fighting. War seems inevitable, so reinterpreting it could be vital to our future.

Futuract takes the theme ‘Design 2050: Possibilities for Tomorrow’ in a very serious manner and offers a take on redesigning the unthinkable—a future where war is playful, educational, nurturing and dare we say, fun!

exhibited at the 2009 Singapore Design Festival in collaboration with FUTURACT

The world has increasingly become connected. Global networks such as GPS can tell us where we are in relation to others. Mobile telecommunications and the Internet allow us to exchange data at a dizzying rate. While we have become masters of graphic, video and voice representation, which allows us to transfer information and ideas, we still do not have a viable means to exchange deeper emotions.

In the Mixed Reality Lab at the National University of Singapore, researchers are developing new technologies for interaction, which address the need for novel forms to communicate more then ideas but also feelings. We do this by engaging all our senses over the network. Research into areas such as remote haptic communication, food teleportation, interfaces build from three-dimensionally animated liquids, and even smell and taste communication are currently being conducted at the Mixed Reality Lab.

In this talk for TEDx Zurich, I outline the motivations and implementations of various technologies and behavioral models that will shape the way we as a species will communicate in the future.

In collaboration with Learning and Participation at Southbank Centre and Central Saint Martins College CPNE, colleagues and i designed and produced a Gamelan Pavilion that featured as a focal point for the Overture Opening of The Royal Festival Hall in June 2007. Gamelan Players performed under the sails non-stop for 48 hours. Thousands of people gathered to listen and watch over the weekend.

The Individualist lounge is an installation that presents each person with conditions of isolation, voyeurism and (dis)synchronicity. It is a moveable place that can physically be installed in countless spaces. Its technical application is rudimentary and primitive, and therefore reliable and tested. Its conception embodies levels of simulation. It parallels the Internet, theories of collective consciousness, seemingly chaotic and contrived spontaneity, and sometimes revolution through human intervention.

STUTTERBOX is a transdisciplinary platform to tell stories with. Its aim is to be impulsive and participatory, and provides a “no man’s land” between author and audience, in which the very act of narration becomes one with the performance.

Orchestration of a performance happens on multiple levels. The table itself hosts a horizontal surface in which a large display is contained. The display not only shows the user and audience an outcome of a narrative, but also acts as the instrument interface which users play so that a story may unfold.

Counterpart to the virtual narrative environment is a physical condition. In order to manipulate aspects contained within the surface of the display table, real-life, three dimensional objects must be used. These “Tangibles” house fiduciary symbols that act as triggers which activate elements that appear on the display.

Tangibles can be any object so long as they contain a fiduciary symbol. This means that physical props arranged on the surface of the table can narrate a story in parallel and even interact with one another in real-time, affecting the virtual narrative displayed in the table. This synchronicity between virtual and tangible is an essential part to the interaction in STUTTERBOX.

When a person places a Tangible on the table, it activates elements of the narrative that are either characters or environments. Other Tangibles can be placed on the surface to effect the mood and disposition of each element. Not only does each element of the narrative act in accordance to the whim of the author, but they are also programmed to be generative. Combinations of characters, environments and disposition Tangibles produce new forms of output, each element building upon another in a semantic fashion.

STUTTERBOX effectively blurs the dichotomous relationship between author and audience. Both author and audience of the story constructed on STUTTERBOX become subject to each others influence, which in turn affects the story in unexpected and dynamic ways.

This project was a collaboration between myself, Jan Berkel, Crystal Campbell, Martin Dittus and Adam Krause. You can now find it residing in the London Hackspace.

In 1982 Larry Dossey, an American physician, coined the term "time-sickness" to describe the obsessive belief that "time is getting away, that there isn't enough of it, and that you must pedal faster and faster to keep up".

Guy Claxton, a British psychologist, thinks acceleration is now second nature to us: "We have developed an inner psychology of speed, of saving time and maximising efficiency, which is getting stronger by the day".

These comments and quotes motivated the production of this short video addressing the trend of 'slow' living; to ask ourselves whether conducting one's day to day actions slowly genuinely promotes quality of life, and whether this quality can generate happiness and wellbeing.
